ESF Dream Camp Mentors Make a Difference!
The ESF Dream Camp After-School Program kicked off on Wednesday, October 3, 2007. The program serves 200 children from low-income families in Philadelphia, PA and Hartford, CT. Like ESF, the After-School Program is staffed by an elite group of individuals committed to making a difference in the lives of others. Each mentor is responsible for a group of 3-4 children and provides his or her students with academic support through homework help and tutoring. Additionally, mentors implement reading and math enrichment activities and a character education program designed to build life skills. It is the ideal job for aspiring educators to gain valuable hands-on experience!
Dream Campers also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of special programs throughout the year. In Philadelphia, students made Thanksgiving placemats to donate to St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, as part of Dream Camp’s community service initiative. At Trinity College, Dream Campers have the opportunity to participate in dance workshops that teach the history of dance and the basics of choreography. Dream Campers at both locations are competing for the title of Reading Champion through the “Dream Camp Reads Book Challenge.” The child who reads the most books will be crowned at the end of spring semester as our big winner and will receive a brand new computer!
Many of this year’s mentors worked at ESF during the summer months and opted to continue their experience during the school year.
